Creating new Slides using the OpenOffice Presentation Module

If you followed the instructions on creating a new presentation in the previous section, you should see something like the following on your screen:

Click on “Click to add title” and type in the string: “Why Use Linux?”:

Click on the “My Company Name” bullet: we don't actually want our company name here,so highlight the text and overtype it with “Linux is platform independent”, then hit “Enter”:

Now type the following:

  • “Linux is light on resources” then ENTER

  • “Linux is fast” then ENTER

  • “Linux is free to use and distribute” then ENTER

  • “Major updates are released every six months” then ENTER

  • “Linux Security is tight” then ENTER

  • “Linux is easy to use” then ENTER

The result should look something like the following:

Now our first slide is complete, we need to create the next one. In the left hand pane, right click over the thumbnail of your first slide and pick “New Slide”:

You should now see two thumbnails in the left pane and a new slide in the right hand one:

Click on “Click to add title” in the right hand pane and type “Linux is platform independent”, then click on “Click to add an outline” and type:

  • Linux can run on any of the following hardware:” then ENTER

  • Tab, then “Intel Celeron and Pentium processors” then ENTER

  • Current Intel Core processors” then ENTER

  • Current Intel low-power Atom processors” then ENTER

  • “Intel IA-64 (Itanium) processors” then ENTER

  • “AMD 32 bit mode (-older AMDs)” then ENTER

  • AMD 64 bit mode (current Athlon II, Phenom, etc)” then ENTER

  • “Smartphones (e.g. Google Android)”

The result should be an indented list as follows:

In the left hand pane, let's now right click the second slide and choose “New Slide”:

You should now see a third thumbnail in the left hand pane and a new window template in the right hand pane. Click on “Click to add title” in the right hand pane and type “Linux is light on resources”; click on “Click to add an outline”, then:

  • Type: “The Linux kernel is kept to a minimum of essential functions (-no bloatware)”

  • Highlight “bloatware” and hit CTRL+I (-to change it to italics)

  • Click back on the end of the line -after “)” then press the ENTER key

  • "Linux gives each running process a priority, based on the user that submitted it" then ENTER

  • "Linux can run on old, slow hardware" then ENTER

  • "Linux can run on hardware with little available hard disc space" then ENTER

  • "Linux can be run entirely from a Live CD or USB memory stick"

After which, slide 3 should look as follows:

You should now have three completed slides of your presentation. To preview what it will look like, select:

View → Slide Show

..or just hit the F5 key:

You should see the first slide displayed:

Hit the ENTER key to display successive slides: when the slides run out, you will be taken back to the “Design” mode.

Now, let's save our handiwork using:

File → Save As

Input your chosen filename (-here, I have entered “whyUseLinux”) then click on the “Save” button:

Finally, let's close the presentation by using:

File → Close
