Creating a Server Startup USB

Creating a Startup USB stick containing the Ubuntu Server Edition of Linux

Once you have downloaded the server image, you will next need to create a startup disc. In our experience, CDs/DVDs are really slow to use, so the best way is to create the image on a USB memory stick as follows. See the USB memory stick definition if you are unsure what this is.

In our experience, CDs/DVDs are really slow to use, so the best way is to create the image on a USB memory stick as follows ..

Firstly, plug in a spare USB drive to a USB port on your desktop. If you are using Ubuntu, the USB should mount and show up on the Gnome desktop as follows:

USB Drive on the GUI

If you are using an Ubuntu desktop to create the startup disc, then you already have a utility to to this under:

System → Administration → Startup Disk Creator

Startup Disc Menu

Note: if you are not using an Ubuntu desktop, you can use other utilties such as Brasero or Infra Recorder to do the same thing

A dialogue will open up - select your image and the USB stick, then click "Make Startup Disk"

Make Startup Disc Option

A new dialogue box will display, showing the progress:

Copy Progress

Once complete, you'll see the following:

Copy Complete

Click on "Quit" to exit this. Finally, right-click the USB drive on your desktop and select "Safely RemoveDrive":

Copy Complete

Your USB startup disc is now ready to be removed from your desktop and inserted in your server!
